The landscape for foundations is changing at a rapid pace. Twenty years ago the average foundation supported a smaller or larger number of non-profit organizations which provided services in the field the foundation wanted to support.

Nowadays, there are social enterprises, social activists, social businesses, venture philanthropy funds, social stock exchanges and even information providers who all aim to build a better world. Foundations have thus more flexibility in formulating their strategies.
